Top Picks of 2007

When I sat down to my make Top 10 indie rock/pop songs of 2007, it quickly became the Top 40 of 2007. So I'm calling these my top picks instead, just because it was so hard to select only 10 of them! This was an amazing year for music, and I look forward to what 2008 has in store!

And if you're asking yourself, ''But Mister Medley, what about your top dance tracks of '07?" Well, I didn't really feel the need to cover those since everything I post is a favorite of mine. I could put up Justice's D.A.N.C.E., but chances are, you already have it on your computer!

I just recently got into My Teenage Stride, but I like the sound enough to put them on the list. Their songs have good range, which keeps them from becoming predictable. This one, in particular, is a favorite this year.

My Teenage Stride - Ears Like Golden Bats

Cyhsy

CYHSY returned with a new album with a slightly different sound, but still very much them, and worked this crazy experimental dance track out.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Satan Said Dance

A guy playing his acoustic guitar alone, to me, there's nothing more boring. But something about Jose grabs my attention and keeps it, maybe it's his pretty voice.

Jose Gonzalez - Down The Line

Themaryonettes

I would never know Slow was a new song without blogs telling me otherwise, it truly sounds like 1980's mope rock... I lived for this sound as a teenager! I totally don't mind if they steal the sound because it's all nostalgic for me.

The Mary Onettes - Slow

Yeasayer spiritually channeled Fleetwood Mac and became possessed by pure magic. I read in an interview they don't plan to stick to any certain type of sound or genre, which kind of disappoints me, because I'd love to hear more amazing songs like 2080 next year.

Yeasayer - 2080

It's all about the piano for me when it comes to this band. I don't know if I've heard a song that I didn't like by the White Rabbits.

White Rabbits - While We Go Dancing

Feist

Feist just showed up out of nowhere and stole the stage. Don't let her soft voice fool you, girl's a fucking diva.

Feist - Sealion

Here's folk rock at it's finest. I immediately fell in love with this song early this year, then bought the CD, and loved the whole thing - still do! I think people severely overlooked this underrated album.

Papercuts - John Brown

I've been a huge fan of the band for years now, and it's fun to watch this band grow and progress with each album. It just keeps getting better.

Liars - Clear Island

Voxtrot

I actually hated this song when I first heard it. So I skipped it for a long time. Then one night I finally gave it a listen with my full attention. Due to surrounding circumstances at that point, it really spoke to me. Then I realized Voxtrot's entire album is full of amazing lyrics. The sound is really good too, but the words are some of the best I've heard in a long time.

Voxtrot - Kid Gloves

Robocat / Mr. Ice Cream

According to The Knife Machine, up-and-coming Sydney DJ pair, their music sounds like 102 hours of an ass bouncing on your face. If that doesn't sell you, I'm not surprised!

Theknifemachine

But give them a try anyway, they have some hot stinkin' dirty techno remixes worth a shot.

(Speaking of Mr. Ice Cream, I meant to post this next one way back when.)

The Distance (Metronomy Remix)

Let's keep it cute, sweet and simple. Metronomy remixing Dntel's The Distance is almost-minimal pop with a subtle increase in volume and strength as the song progresses. In a perfect world, this song would be topping radio charts.

Ice + goodies

Just some new dance-friendly goodies for your collection...

I don't like Muscles much because I can't stand his incessant need to yell and call it singing, but this song actually does it for me.

Kylie can do no wrong, and Revolte just takes it to another level.

Autokratz_2

The Cazals are pretty good, but autoKratz is the sugar to my kool-aid.

Ride The Front Seat / Style Crusader

Bigface is a 5 man band from the UK making a wonderful addition to the Kitsune sound. Their website doesn't say much more about who they are, so I'll let the tunes speak for themselves.

Little Bit / Paris

These videos really stand out, and it's a rare case when I like the vid better than the actual song. But here are a few examples, starting off with the cutest girl ever, Lykke Li. This girl from Sweden totally steals my heart.

(The downloads are for the mp3's, not the vids!)

And check out this UK band Friendly Fires!

Summer Party

A friend of mine liked Breakbot's rework of Aerius Light and sent me this cool track. I approve!
