Electric Feel / Kids

MGMT are one of those groups I've been meaning to post, but then it usually winds up on the backburner for inexcusable reasons. So if you've been listening to indie radio or surfing the musical blogosphere regularly, you might already be well acquainted. However, if this is something you've skimmed over without devoting your full attention, maybe it's time for a new listening awareness. Chock full of talent and growing popularity, it won't be long before they get special recognition from sizeable media outlets. And if for some reason they don't reach a larger audience, you can add it to your list of why MTV sucks.

A Man Of A Million Faces / Three-Way

My imaginary lover Stephin Merritt is back in full force with new solo material, plus an upcoming Magnetic Fields album. Anyone who was disappointed in his last release (Showtunes) can rest easy. The genius behind 69 Love Songs hasn't lost his magic, and it's apparent in his most recent work that he's only becoming progressively better over time. We all hit a bump in the road at some point, so let's forgive and forget. Enjoy!

Some Indulgence

The Embassy is an electronic twosome from Sweden, and as usual, the Swedish know good music. Breezy synths, Smiths-y guitar strumming and a girly moan reminiscent of Duran Duran's All She Wants Is gives this song a big nod to their 80's influences, but avoids coming off as cliche or predictable.

Theembassy

And if you ever picked up that track by The Tough Alliance I posted awhile back, you'll be interested in this interpretation of today's download. They place a lot of emphasis on the keys and make a really stylish reverb piece that, in some ways, is all their own.

Aerius Light (Breakbot's Rework)

I've only heard a few things by DatA, but Breakbot's rework of Aerius Light is nothing short of awesome! Paired with flowing leads that throw back to the early days of new wave and an undeniably sexy bass riff, a 3 minute and 40 second dance-a-thon is the perfect outlet for the cool energy pouring out of here. Watch out for the catchy beat and those oh-so-popular synth stabs, you could break a hip! My description might make the song appear hard, but this one's actually kind of light. Just listen to it... it's a subtle force.

The Kids Are Alright / Sore Throat Break

I don't know much about Mixhell, and I'm too busy these days to find out. All I know is A) it's aggressive-dirty-banger house, B) it's a husband and wife, and C) it's good!

Oh, and this is off topic, but I caught the M.I.A. show at the Wiltern in LA this past Friday - all I can say is wow. If you ever get the chance to see them live - GO! I've never seen anything quite like it. I was pleasantly surprised to find out Blaqstarr was there too.

Here's a little pic I snapped with my crappy cell phone when she asked the audience to get on stage.

Jacques Cousteau

Supplied with mustaches for nutrients and power, please welcome this new Los Angeles duo called Hmmm. Grabbing components from their electronic background and mixing them with synthesized steel drums and cute tales of ocean and travel make for a vacation to a quirky tropical paradise.

Starlett Johansson

Apologies for getting all YouTube on your ass lately, but this one is worth it! Visually accompanying the single Starlett Johansson with a new music video are The Teenagers. You may have picked up a few of their remixes on MM or elsewhere, but here lies further proof the band is just as incredible on their own two (or six) feet.

Pong

Star Madman is a girl and her keyboard workin' it out retro style for your listening pleasure. After years of performing elaborate piano arrangements, followed by collaborations with Vast and resident house DJ's in the Oklahoma scene, she has gathered elements from each musical experience to tell her own story. Synth heavy compositions suffused with sentiment conceive a distinguished musical balance.
